6.1 What is a population?

In population genetics, the term population refers to a group of interbreeding individuals.

Determining whether a group of individuals is a “population” is subjective. Groups exchange migrants at different rates (a process called gene flow), and there is no definitive boundary for when they constitute separate populations.
